SECTOR 2020/2021: Year in Review

Dear loyal readers of the SECTOR,

There we are, at the end of the academic year again. That also means that it’s time for the last SECTOR article before we return again around October. But before we all go on holiday, let us first review the past year and remember the articles we have published.

Something to note about the past year is that we, as a committee, have tried to look for authors of different disciplines aside from econometrics. This way, the topics have become more diverse while still being appealing for our audience. A byproduct of this new aim might be that more well-known authors have written for the SECTOR, which makes for captivating articles.

It led to a substantial article about COVID-19, pandemic measures and possibilities for vaccines.

For instance, back in October, we held an in-depth interview with VU board president Mirjam van Praag, who has also been a crown member of the SER. Shortly afterwards we interviewed medical doctor and microbiologist Hans Zaaijer, who has appeared on national television quite a few times. It led to a substantial article about COVID-19, pandemic measures and possibilities for vaccines. Also, a lot of statistics go into determining the percentage of the population with COVID antibodies from blood samples. Interesting stuff!

Also around that time, we started to publish articles from the STAtOR again. Committee member Xerxes Koehoorn remembered that this used to be done a few years ago when he was already a member of the SECTOR. The editorial board of the STAtOR kindly allowed us to publish the article “Think twice before measuring”, where Gerrit Stemerdrink questions the way the NS measures train punctuality.

This turned out to be just the beginning, as Tijms also thought up puzzles for our Christmas special, and let us publish multiple other articles he wrote.

We also got our eyes on an article by Henk Tijms about a funny probability game called “Russian Egg Roulette” which was played on the NBC Tonight Show. This turned out to be just the beginning, as Tijms also thought up puzzles for our Christmas special, and let us publish multiple other articles he wrote. Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to the editorial board of the STAtOR, Gerrit Stemerdink, Dennis Huisman, Merith Pelger and Henk Tijms for contributing to the SECTOR this year.

We do want to give Henk Tijms some additional thanks, as he also offered some great suggestions which led to interesting articles, like interviewing Michel van de Coevering, who has four master’s degrees and is currently a CFO. We have learned a lot from his interesting curriculum. Bo Paulle was another suggestion of Tijms. You might have seen this sociologist on the NPO documentary “Klassen”. In an interview, Bo Paulle explained about his mission to tackle educational inequality. Even though sociology is an entirely different discipline, we were pleased to hear that a lot of statistics and econometrics are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of new education programmes.

Additionally, various other articles were written by devoted Kraketters.

Aside from these interviews, we of course also published reviews of most of the formal Kraket activities like the Forum, the Caseday and the Diversity and Development day. Additionally, various other articles were written by devoted Kraketters. We would like to thank Faaris Akbar, Luc Zeinstra, Duy Nguyen, Maarten Verhoef, Janna Kroezen, Martijn de Bast, Marcello de Wit, Tom Korenwinder, Lia Mendeszoon, Amber Politiek, Estée van der Vlies, Ivo Warmerdam, Tristan de Keyzer, Floris Six Dijkstra, Sasin Jingkaojai, Sun Wester, Ryan Buruss and Tristan Wennink for their contribution!

Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Finaps, Optiver and Flow Traders for their insightful company articles this year. I think these articles serve a great role in giving our members a way to orientate themselves on a possible place of work. It works both ways of course, since a company article reaches a large crowd of econometrics students from all years.

Those were just some of the highlights of this year; of course it’s not possible to mention every article. All that is left for me is to wish you a nice summer. See you next academic year!
